What do Jordanian universities require?
For master's admission, you need a score on an international English test, meaning one of these:
- TOEFL iBT: An American test, scored out of 120
- IELTS Academic: A British test, scored out of 9
- Test centre: Online tests taken at home aren't accepted
- 2 years: How long a score usually stays valid
- 6 hours: Of remedial English if you fall short
- 4 skills: Reading, listening, writing, speaking
What score do you need?
| Field | TOEFL iBT | IELTS |
| Engineering, medicine, pharmacy and English-language majors | 90 | 6.5 |
| Other science majors and business administration | 69 | 5.5 |
| Humanities | 59 | 5 |
|---|
These are the most common scores at Jordanian universities, such as Yarmouk and the Hashemite University. Some universities use only two tiers, and some programmes set their own requirements, so check with your university and programme before you apply.

Frequently asked questions
What TOEFL score do I need for a master's in Jordan?
It depends on your field: usually 90 for engineering, medicine, pharmacy and English-language majors, 69 for other science majors and business administration, and 59 for the humanities. Check with your university, as requirements differ between universities.
And what IELTS score?
In the same order: usually 6.5, 5.5 or 5, on IELTS Academic.
TOEFL or IELTS: which is better for a master's?
Jordanian universities accept both. In IELTS you speak with an examiner, and in TOEFL you record your answers on a computer. Your tutor can help you choose based on your level and your time.
Where do I take the test? Can I take it at home?
You need to take it at an approved test centre. In Jordan, that's TOEFL iBT at AMIDEAST or approved centres at some universities, and IELTS at the British Council or other approved centres. Online tests taken at home aren't accepted.
How long is my score valid?
Most universities require it to be less than two years old at the start of the semester you enrol in.
What happens if I don't reach the score?
If you meet the other admission requirements, you're admitted, but you take 6 hours of remedial English and must pass them in your first semester.
The new TOEFL is scored out of 6. How do I know if I reached the score?
For a transition period, your result also shows a score out of 120, so you can compare it directly with your university's requirement.
Can I try a lesson before committing?
Yes. Book your first lesson with any tutor at half price, then decide whether to continue.
