How does English work at university?
Most Jordanian universities give new students an English placement test, and depending on the result you start with one of these:
- Remedial English (99): If you don't pass the placement test; you must pass it before 101
- Required English courses: Such as 101 and 102; course numbers vary by university
- Placement test: Prepare before it
- 99: A strong foundation before 101
- 101 and 102: Grammar, writing and exams
- Your major: Lectures and presentations in English

Frequently asked questions
What is the university placement test?
An English test that new students take at most Jordanian universities. Depending on the result, you either take remedial English (99) or start directly with the required English courses.
What is remedial English (99)?
A foundation English course for students who don't pass the placement test, and you must pass it before 101. At many universities, its hours don't count toward your GPA or the hours you need to graduate.
Can you prepare me for the placement test?
Yes. Your tutor works with you on grammar, reading and vocabulary, so you go into the test ready.
Can you help with 101 or my major courses?
Yes. Send your tutor the textbook or slides before the lesson, and they'll explain the material, prepare you for the exam, and help you practise writing reports and giving presentations.
